Movie Review: Gotham Knight
I netflixed Batman: Gotham Knight, the new animated movie in the same vein as Animatrix: a collection of different anime shorts by different creators set in the Batman Begins/Dark Knight setting. With the last couple animated DC releases (Superman: Doomsday and Justice League: New Frontier), I bought them right away but I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy this one. I was wrong to doubt. Gotham Knight captures a lot of the feel of the Batman Begins movie and introduces Crispus Allen (from GCPD), Killer Croc, and Deadshot to the Batman Begins universe. It also brings back the movie Scarecrow for an appearance. Right from the beginning it had me hooked with a new take on one of my favorite Batman stories. Back in the eighties, there was a comic story where three cops share stories of their encounters with Batman and each one saw him as a wildly different character. The Batman animated series did something similiar to this with an episode where kids share stories with eachother of what they think Batman is (and this gave them excuse to create an animated version of Dark Knight Returns). The new movie's first animated short is kind of a blend of the two stories, with kids telling about their encounters with the Dark Knight. As good as a start as that is, it gets better. There are some really good stories in this movie. It is well worth a rental.

Disgaea: The Anime
A Christmas gift from a friend, I watched the first two episodes of the Disgaea anime last night after the Final Fantasy game wrapped up. I was actually pretty disappointed. The show manages to capture a bit of the video game's humor and I was happy to see that the english dub did use the same voice for Laharl, but the new voice for Etna wasn't nearly as fun. The voice was the same for Flonne, which would have been fine if the "Angel Trainee" wasn't given such a huge part in the first two episodes. Hearing her whine a bit about the importance of love and kindness before kicking some demon-butt in the game is fine, but hearing the voice through a whole episode of a show gets real, real old.

Cool anime-inspired dream
I dreamt last night that I was the pilot of a guymelef (giant steam-punk robot) that looked a lot like Escaflowne, Van's guymelef in the Vision of Escaflowne. A giant robot/fortress was marching towards the city or castle I was protecting along with an army of guymelefs. I took out a few of the smaller ones and then charged the large two-legged robo-fortress but it reached down, snatched me up in its giant hands and put me in a cavity in its chest. A door closed and I was locked in.
(Just remembered! During the fight with the small guymelefs, I dreamt that I woke up. There was a woman in bed next to me and I was thrashing around doing sword-fighting moves. I didn't recognize the woman but some-how knew she was my girlfriend in the dream. She asked me what I was doing and I told her I was fighting the bad guys. She told me I better get back to the battle then and then I returned to my first dream.)
