DVD woes
The ultimate edition of my favorite movie of all-time is out. The movie is Blade Runner.

The problem is that the 5 disc set is really expensive because of a limited edition box that will no doubt end up like my limited edition Cylon Head box (from Battlestar Galactica), in a box in my closet. The only other editions that get all five discs are the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray editions, which I know I will want to buy anyway whenever I get a HD DVD player, but I don't know when that will be.

You can get an HD-DVD player for $200 these days. Not too bad. Blu-Ray is more but the PS3 includes it. However, I don't plan to get a PS3 any time soon.

Though I know I won't be able to buy a HDDVD player any time soon, there is a part of me that wants to wait to see the Blade Runner Ultimate Cut until I can see it in HD. It just seems awesome to think that my first HDDVD could be the first time I see all the new scenes in the Ultimate Cut.

I Am Legend
Flavia and I were planning to see it this weekend but a mixture of snowstorms and sickness kept us from going anywhere. I can't wait to see the new version, even though I heard they screwed up the ending.

For anyone interested, you can see the original movie for free on Youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xRwVTKRaxs (This is legal as this movie had its copyright expire and is now public domain....I bought my DVD of it for a dollar and it included House on Haunted Hill as well.)

Cloverfield
So the Abrams movie, Cloverfield, is still a big mystery and it comes out in January. It's a giant monster. If that wasn't completely clear before, the new trailer makes that clear. Abrams claimed it was a new property, not a license or sequel, and a lot of folks have been speculating it is Lovecraft-based. Abrams said he got the idea when looking at Godzilla merchandise in Japan and thinking that America needs its own giant monster. (He said King Kong was too cute.)

The new trailer makes it look a lot like Godzilla.....and a good Godzilla, not "Zilla" from the first US movie. First of all, it sounds like Godzilla's roar a couple times in the background. Second, there is one shot of "Cloverfield" walking past some buildings and you don't see much...but what you do see could easily be the classic Godzilla. It is the right size and I swear I saw spines on its back. Of course, I may just be seeing what I want to, because I would love to see a good big-budget American-made 'zilla.

Spider-Man 3: How it Should Have Ended
The guys who made the How it Should Have Ended shorts have a new one: Spider-Man 3, which makes fun of many of the plot problems in the movie. I just watched Spidey 3 earlier this week, having not bothered seeing it in the theatres after hearing the reviews. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting, and Flavia actually said it was her favorite of the three. It felt a lot like a connected series of TV episodes dealing with seperate plots 20 minutes at a time, instead of a movie, which was fine by me. (For example, the first 20 minutes deal with the fall-out of Harry finding out Peter is Spidey at the end of the second movie, then you go into the rise and first defeat of Sandman, while hinting at Venom who is not seen until later in the movie, and so on with each plot getting focused on for a short time until they all come together for the ending which could have been a "season finale.")

Anyways, I liked the movie. I liked the parody I linked above even better.

For those of you who missed it before when I posted it, here is the How Superman Should Have Ended, their parody for the 1979 movie.

Quickie Movie Reviews
Flavia and I watched a lot of movies over this weekend. For anyone wondering:

Transformers (2007): A ton better than I expected. The movie has the splashy action and special effects I expected, but also turned out to be a lot of fun, with a lot of truly funny moments. Flavia even liked it a lot and she had no interest in Transformers. (4 out of 5 stars)

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle: Very silly, as expected. I decided to finally watch this after seeing the sequel's trailer and knowing I want to see H&K2. Two stoners have a crazy night trying to get to White Castle. Trailer for H&KGTWC(3/5)

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Not as funny as the BBC series, but close. It still had my favorite character in it (The potted petunias), so I was happy. (3/5)

Election: Some clever fun. Characters do some crappy things and the universe craps on them in return. Click here for the trailer on youtube (4/5)

Gia: Angelina Jolie stars as a 70s supermodel with an attitude and a drug problem. Some of her sexiest stuff in this movie, particularly the lesbian scenes. There is also some big-time drama where she proves she can act. Jolie is an actress I find sexy some roles and so-not sexy in others. She does both in this movie....really well. (3.5/5)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Seeing what came out of this, I thought I might appreciate the original movie more now. I didn't. It is bad. Very bad. I can appreciate what Joss wanted to do, but not enough to make me watch this all the way through. I was reminded why it took so long for me to give the TV show a chance as I couldn't even finish watching the movie this time. (1/5)

Quickie Movie Reviews
In attempt to put something on my LJ, assuring folks I am still alive, here are some quickie movie reviews of stuff I have watched recently:

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix- Out of the books I have read, this one is my favorite. Seeing the movie, I knew they would cut out a lot and they did. Still, this one is my favorite movie of the series as well as the story takes some dark twists. Casting for the new characters is dead-accurate, which is something this series has always managed to do. It's a fun movie as always and worth seeing. (4.25 out of 5 stars)

My Super Ex-Girlfriend- The comedy about a regular guy (Luke Wilson) trying to break up with his crazy superhero girlfriend (Uma Therman) seemed like it could be amusing but I never got around to seeing until recently. It was amusing.....but only slightly so. There are very few laugh-out-load moments, but a lot of parts made me smile and the special effects scenes are really well done. It is worth watching once, but don't go out of your way to see it. A link to the trailer (2.5/5)

Godzilla: Final Wars- If you don't like other Godzilla movies, this one won't change your mind. The special effects are better than most (being the most expensive Godzilla movie yet) but the movie still manages to have scenes where the special effects are laughable. The plot is about what you expect and very similar to the previous "Destroy All Monsters!" When aliens invade Earth, using Earth's giant monsters as weapons, it is up to Godzilla and Mothra to save the day. Yep, this one of those good old-fashioned Monster throw-downs that made for all of the coolest Toho Giant Monster films. Godzilla fights classic monsters in locations all over the world (including Kumonga, who I only ever remember seeing before in Son of Godzilla). Included in these fights is one I've been wanting to see for years, Godzilla vs the American Godzilla! This movie also happens to be the first movie to have more monsters in it than "Destroy All Monsters!"

It has everything you could want in a Godzilla movie, plus martial arts! The Earth Defense Force has an elite group of superpowered mutant martial artists who give Toho an excuse to throw some cheap Matrix-style kung-fu sequences in to the movie. Personally, I thought the Martial Arts was fun, but a little out of place as I always spent these scenes wondering how long it would be until we'd see another giant monster fight

Here is a link to the Japanese Theatrical Trailer for Godzilla: Final Wars. (4/5)

Casanova- Heath Ledger stars as the legendary lover in this comedic period piece. The costumes are fantastic and the plot is a lot of fun. The movie is filled with mistaken identities and general sneakiness and Casanova pretends to be people he isn't to get close to the girl he loves while avoiding the inquisition who is looking for him. The movie was shot on location in Venice, so there is a lot of amazing scenery. A link to the trailer. (4/5)

Very Short Movie Review: Sicko
Flavia and I went to see Sicko on Friday. We both agreed it was Michael Moore's best film yet. It is a very moving look at the US Healthcare system (insurance companies) and compares them to the universal healthcare systems found in many other countries. The fairest criticism I have heard of Moore is that he just preaches to the masses and that he doesn't make anything that would convince someone of anything they don't already believe. I believe this one could really open people's eyes up to the advantage of a universal healthcare system in the US as he interviews people in different countries about their healthcare and in the most emotionally moving part of the film, brings some 9-11 rescue workers who were having problems getting any care here in the US, to Cuba where the government provided them with free care and inexpensive prescriptions, just like all the citizens there get.

Movie Review: Legend of Zorro
Legend of Zorro- I don't know if I've ever mentioned this, but I'm a Zorro fan. Sure, I'm a bigger fan of Superman and several other characters, but I grew up watching the Disney TV series. I dressed up as Zorro one year in elementary school.

I even remember watching a really bad cartoon and knowing as a seven year old that the cartoon wasn't very good, but watching it anyway....because its Zorro! That pretty much sums up this movie. I skipped seeing it when it came out because several friends gave it a big thumbs down and as I watched it, I could see why. It is a big step down from Mask of Zorro. However, it had so many classic Zorro moments, like Alejandro trying to catch up with the train on Tornado or rearing up and lifting his sword against the sunset at the end. In fact, the movie seemed filled with so many homages to past Zorro movies and shows that I was constantly thinking back to shows I saw as a kiand thinking "that's just like when Diego...."

The action is way over the top, even for Zorro. Hell, the stuff Zorro (and his son!) pulls off in this movie would seem over-the-top in a Bond flick. Still, it is a swashbuckling flick with a whole lot of fun. So, it's not too good, but I don't think its that bad either. I've seen and even own worse Zorro movies.

Movie Reviews: A New World and Reign of Fire
A New World- This movie came out about a year ago and from the trailers I was really excited to see it. It tells the story of John Smith and Pocahontas. It turned out to be a really pretty movie....that's very, very slow. The sets and scenery are fantastic. According to the extras on the DVD, they built a complete replica of Jamestown and went to great lengths to research and replicate the look of the native American tribe Pocohantas was from, a tribe that is no longer around. They even used the dead language of the tribe for the scenes, which seems to be a trend in movies lately. Another thing that was really impressive and I always like to see in historical flicks, was that the movie had some terrific costumes. Sadly, the movies pacing is so poor, that I can't recommend it unless you are a big history buff or just want to see the pretty pictures.

Reign of Fire- This movie is smarter than it looked in the trailer, which isn't saying much since the trailer made it look like a movie on the same level as Snakes on a Plane. The trailer left me with no interest in seeing this despite a love for dragons. A friend gave me the DVD recently saying "It's worth watching once but not really worth owning." I'd agree. I really liked the beginning when it gave a glimpse in to the life of the survivors. The movie has its hokey parts, of course, but it also has a neat post-apocalyptic edge to it.

Movie Review: Superman: Braniac Attacks
This is a direct-to-DVD movie from Warner Brothers Animation

Wow, was this movie ever screwed up. I didn't pick it up when it came out because I read some bad reviews of it, but found it at a really good price recently and picked it up. I'm glad I got it cheap, because the Superman fan in me still likes owning it....but man is it bad.

More Elric Movie talk
In a thread on Multiverse.org, Moorcock has been posting, responding to talk about the movie. He said that they are talking about the movie, 300, as an example of the style and color for the movie. This makes me very happy to hear as I think Elric should have something otherworldly-looking about it.

Also, a quote from the producer was posted that gives me more hope of this being done right: "I heard about a fantastic and life-changing British fantasy series of books. I was absolutely stunned by the imagination, daring and intelligence of the books. To me it is one of the great works of imagination in the twentieth century. I grew up on Tolkien but this, to be honest, leaves him in the dust as far as ambition and philosophical depth. At least, that is how I feel, and that is how anyone attempting to film a book should feel - utter commitment."

Reading this, relieved me a great deal. When they originally optioned the series after the big hit of the LotR movie, I feared that the producers would be thinking that Elric should be made in the same style as the LotR movies and that they didn't see how different a series it was. I loved the LotR movies (much more than the books), but if they did Elric in the same style it would be a travesty. LotR is a completely escapist fantasy, so long shots of beautiful forests, mountains and valleys makes sense. Hell, that is the way the books are written. "Look how beautiful this world is! Look how nice the hobbits are! Look how noble Aragorn is! Don't you want to live in Middle Earth in a pretty Elven house? Of course you do!" Right from the beginning of Fellowship, I wanted to climb in the screen and visit the shire. I don't think anyone reads Elric and says, "what a beautiful place. I want to live there."

Elric Movie News!
Michael Moorcock posted on his web-site:

I was, as it happens, talking to the producers only a week or so ago. Now that work is finished on The Golden Compass they're re-engaging rapidly, they said, with the Elric movie. We've changed approach once or twice as far as the production is concerned -- I think for the better. The 'fantasy noir' idea is paramount at the moment. I'm afraid I can't say much else at this stage, but we're still moving slowly ahead! There's no doubt that the relative failures of some over-budget fantasy movies like Riddick, Van Helsing, even Kong, made Universal take the movie off the front burner for a while, but since then they've had successes with dark, more thoughtful fantasy movies, including Pan's Labyrinth and Children of Men, which, in my view, Elric is closer to in mood.

Movie Review: Hellraiser Inferno
I recently found out that there were more Hellraiser movies after Hellraiser: Bloodlines. Since Bloodlines was so bad, I wasn't expecting much, but I watched it anyway because the first two Hellraiser movies are some of what I consider the "best ever" horror movies.

Inferno gives a bit of a Pulp Noir feel to the usual horror as the main character is a crooked cop investigating a murder mystery which starts with an old high school friend of his found ripped to shreds, apparently by big hooks. The main character is also extremely intelligent and loves working out puzzles, which is what led him to become a homicide detective. He takes a small puzzle box from the crime scene....and well, if you've seen the other movies, you know where this is going.

This movie seems to return to the morality-play style of the first movie as Pinhead takes less of a monster role and more of a role as a demon here to lead a well-deserving soul to his eternal damnation. Except......the cop isn't nearly as depraved or sick as the brother, Frank, in the first film. He shows just enough human elements, a love for his wife and kid and a concern for the fate of a child, that you can feel amost sorry for him, while Frank is described again and again in the first one as the worst kind of scum.

One thing that disappoints me in later Hellraisers is that it looks like it is getting easier and easier for people to solve the Lament Confiuration, the puzzle that opens a gateway to hell. In this movie, the main character bairly touches the box before dooming his soul.

I'd say that this movie was better than the last two before it, (Hellraiser III and Bloodlines), but doesn't quite reach the level of the first two. It has lots of creepy bits, though, anbd was worth a rental.

In related news, yes, [info]cochese, Hell is in Michigan.

Chasing Amy
I was feeling really tired this morning and have been wanting to watch a movie, so I popped in Chasing Amy, which I haven't watched in a long time. I forgot how much this movie is like watching a train wreck. Watching Holden say and do all the wrong things, destroying his relationship. I also caught a lot more View Askew references that I did not catch before such as one of Alisa's past exploits that she lists off when she is fighting with Holden being allowing Shannon (Ben Affleck's character in Mallrats) to tape them having sex.

Clerks II opened this weekend and sadly was way down the list at the #6 top-grossing film this weekend. It's gotten really good reviews but Kevin Smith isn't mainstream enough to compete with the other movies out this week. #1 was Pirates again.
