[Link] | Reading the wikipedia article on the new Star Trek movie coming out, there are some things that make me a little more hopeful that it will be good....and two big things that bother me.
Things I like: Nimoy is in it and playing an old Spock. He says he would not do it unless it was good enough. The plot seems to be centered a lot around Spock. Since Quinto is the one bit of casting I like, this is good. Spielberg read the script and really liked it.
Things that bother me: Abrams is a Star Wars fan. That's like having a Batman fan direct a Superman movie. The Superman movie could end up about dark, brooding Superman and this new Trek movie could be a cheesy/pulpy action-fest. I'm not saying that fandoms are exclusive (I am a fan of both Superman and Batman), but if you prefer one, you may want to make the other more like your preferred baby.
The villain is a Romulan. They state that "Balance of Terror" is one of the inspirations. The only thing is that in "Balance of Terror," humanity gets its first view of a Romulan, having only encountered them before in ship-to-ship combat. (The human crew members are shocked to find out that they look like Vulcans and become distrustful of Spock.) So, is this Romulan going to never be seen by the crew? I think its more likely that Abrams is saying "screw continuity." (On a side note, I just saw the Star Trek Enterprise episode when Archer first encounters the Romulans and it was well-handled to fit in continuity.) Also, the shots of the villain (played by Eric Bana) make him look as cheesy as the villain from Star Trek: Nemesis, Star Trek's biggest flop.

Hey now. The Nemesis villain also qualifies as the sexiest Star Trek villain yet. ;)

I have a comment for this, but it might be slightly spoilery. I guess let me say that my understanding is there is a good in-the-movie reason why continuity might be different. (But then, I have not the faintest clue about the history of Romulan / Federation interactions.)

It can be a double edged sword to have a Star Wars fan with a divergence from canon. The challenge you face with any ongoing franchise is for it to be relevant enough for people outside of the core fans to care. While coming from outside of the "fandom" does mean he's unlikely to understand the feelings of fans or be as committed to the canon, it also means he has an outside perspective to bring to the subject matter. There are going to be less sacred cows.
Overall it fits with the current trend for updating old-ass franchises to make them more approachable by new fans, like with Batman and James Bond. I imagine they're also wanting to try something very different after the weak returns of Enterprise and Nemesis.
I do think they are rebooting continuity a la Bond and Batman. There are going to be h/ts to the original timeline (by having Nimoy) but I think its intended as a new beginning, not a prequel to what we've already seen.
