An Alien World
Moving to California, I had one concern. I wasn't afraid whether I would meet new friends or if I would adjust to local culture. I was afraid I would miss the seasons.

You see, I love the cycle of change. I may bitch and complain a little when I have to clear snow off my car, but I was afraid that without it, it would feel like the same day all the time.

...and it did. Sure it got warmer and cooler but that was the extent of the change.

This winter in Michigan has been insanely mild. It has rained a lot, but has not looked or felt like winter until this last week. After a few days of ice storms and snow, I was driving down the freeway today and I saw what I knew I would miss.

There is ice over all the trees and grass. The tall grass and weeds that grow my the side of the high way look like fields of glass shards growing from the ground and the trees look like huge crystals growing in every direction. The sun glints off of everything and it looks like a world of diamonds.

Every year after I've dealt with the fallout of the first snow or ice storm, I hit a day where I am blown away by the beauty and majesty of winter. Today was that day. It is like driving through this alien world I've been to before, but hadn't seen in a while.
